October 2004 Monday Morning Minute Newsletter

One of THOSE Days

Thank you all for your gracious support over the past few weeks. I have recovered most of my lost data and wanted to share my experience in this month’s newsletter.

Have you ever had one of THOSE days? Let me share a bit about a recent day in my life. On Monday, October 18th, I had just completed teaching a three-day class entitled “Becoming the Healer.” I was ready for and excited to have a day off, but I had been summoned to jury duty for that day. I called in the morning to request an extension, but after about 20 tries, it became apparent that I was not going to get through to a human voice. My mind told me I had no choice but to suffer through this eight-hour journey. Throwing all accountability out the door, I started to become angry at the world for the injustice of having to give up a day off to cope with the problems others got themselves into.

I grumbled to my wife and quickly grabbed my palm cell phone to find the directions to where I needed to go. The fatal error blinking on my screen added fuel to my fire, and my mood plunged downhill. My gracious wife, Jeri, drove me down to the courthouse as I begin to stew in my frustration. When I arrived, I was shocked to see two lines of people standing around the building in the pouring rain. You might imagine that the rain would cool my hot head; unfortunately, however, I had chosen the slow line. The metal detector in the line I chose was hypersensitive, and each person had to take off shoes, belt, etc. to enter into this day of service.

Once inside, I was herded into a large room with 250 other cattle, er, I mean people, and within minutes they began calling names for a grand jury. My mind jumped: Grand Jury! That is when “they” keep you for 30 days instead of one!  As they called the last name for that particular jury, I could feel the tension inside my body release only slightly - it hadn’t been mine - but there were other juries to be filled. I decided to pull out my laptop and do some work to take my mind off the selection process.

As I was booting up, my computer started acting funny. Suddenly I had a blue screen saying all memory had been lost. Internally screaming, I realized I just had lost my entire database - in both my palm and my computer.

After agonizing for about an hour on the doom of at all, I brought my awareness to the names being called for the next jury. I saw a woman giving her friend a thumbs - up after her name was called. She was actually excited about serving, and that was when it dawned on me like the blazing sun. This past weekend in “Becoming a Healer,” I had shared the 4 levels of consciousness that I had been taught in my chaplaincy training. To Me – By Me – Through Me – As Me.

To Me - Feeling stuck in the victimhood of things just happening to us
By Me - Knowing that we consciously create things in our lives
Through Me - Realizing something greater than ourselves helps us create our lives
As Me - Being in complete Oneness with everything and having no separation

As I realized I had two feet firmly planted in the “To Me,” I chose for the rest of the week to bring awareness to that greater force in life that passes through me.

Here are a few of the results:

  1. All my clients were gracious to me though I did not know my own schedule.
  2. My neighbors Laura and Peter offered their computer for me to use.
  3. I was able to bring awareness to how much I rely on technology.
  4. Ray Belt, my computer guy, was able to retrieve most of my lost information!!!

By understanding the four stages, like me, you can bring awareness to where you are in any given situation. Once you let go of the concept that things are just happening to you, there is an opportunity to be surprised by life again and discover some peace and happiness in knowing there’s something greater in life than your own ego.

If you want more information about the 4 levels of consciousness and how they can help your work and life, see the Wisdom Flashes to the right, and always feel free to give me a call at 503-522-4562 to discuss how to integrate spirit and work.
