Expertitis - Inflammation of the American Ego (99 Seconds)

Do the experts know what is best for you?

I often joke during company trainings that I am thinking about writing a book entitled, “Expertitis – The Inflammation of the American Ego.”

In this Information Age in the U.S. it appears we have landed in a time of experts who think they know what is best for us; how to eat right, spend our money or even raise our children.

From the latest infomercial to the most recent elected politician, many feel they are right about what you should be doing and how you should be living your life.

In my recent exploration for childcare it is amazing how many options there are between daycare, home care, Montessori; Waldorf, etc.  It could be easy to get lost in all the information.  During my search I noticed a distinct difference between experts and specialists.

The truth is a specialist can be helpful in illuminating choices so you can make your own decisions while an expert feels they adamantly know what is best for you.  How many times this past week did someone tell you what to do and how you should do it?

I believe we are growing out of the expert age and into an era of self empowerment and choice.  No longer does your physician, consultant, childcare worker or even coach know what is best for you.

This week, if you feel pushed by an expert, I recommend asking them if there are other options for your current situation.  If they say no, then get a second opinion.  You are the expert of You.

Wishing you a Happy Monday,

Jason
