The Holiday Overwhelm (120 seconds - Adapted from Dec 04)

Are you secretly dreading the holiday season?  Even as you see people giving and sharing , your thoughts of buying gifts, sending cards, and managing end of year finances are putting a damper on your workday and your holiday spirit.

Like many professionals you may be suffering in silence as you put on a cheery face and muster through all the things on your “to do” list.

The challenge is that as you accomplish things on your list, you may not feel your holiday overwhelm dissipate at all.

You may even start to wonder why some peole are even be singing "Joy to the World" while your thoughts are leaning more towards the avian flu, raising energy prices, and how to complete your "to do" list.

So how do you get out from under your “Screwged” thoughts?

The easiest way is to get present and pay attention

Personally, I like the following Gratitude Exercise:

  1. Close your eyes and notice how you feel physically and emotionally.
  2. Bring your attention to an area in your life you are grateful for.
  3. Let go of your expectations of how things are supposed to look.
  4. And then Relax into the Gratitude of your life as it is.

This week as you go forth into the holiday season be open to the mysteries of life as they unfold.  I invite you to play a game with me and do this exercise of Gratitude every time you see a Santa Claus.

Wishing you a Happy Monday,

Jason
