The Blame Game (110 seconds)

Have you noticed lately how much blame gets thrown around?

Since I no longer am watching TV (see August 8,2005), I have been updating myself with Google news and  I am continually amazed at the finger pointing with Hurricane Katrina.  Some people want to blame FEMA for their poor response; other people want to blame the President, and there are some who blame us all for heating up the ozone and melting the ice caps.

It is true that FEMA could have been more organized, the President could have responded quicker, and we all could have used fewer pollutants and been a bit kinder to Mother Nature; but what good does blame do?

Blame has crept its way into businesses across the world.  From Enron to Microsoft blame has run rampant as a way to avoid responsibility for ourselves.

Is there a place in your business that you have started blaming?

Clients are complaining to you – it must be the product or service.

Not enough time to complete your work – it must be your boss or supervisor.

The company doesn’t care – it must be the system.

It is said that when you point a finger at someone you have three more pointing back at you.

What if this week you became 100% responsible for everything that happened in your life?

Imagine if you could become response able in each situation.  A client complained and you choose to compassionately listen.  You are overworked and the company doesn’t care--you choose to get involved and find solutions.  You become part of the solution, not the problem.

And when the next natural disaster strikes you choose to be proactive instead of reactive.

Wishing you all a response able Monday,

Jason
