August 2005 Monday Morning Minute

A Little Bit Crazy

It all started about a month ago when we moved into our new house and my internet cable guy slyly stated our bill would be cheaper if we hooked up Cable TV.

Although I know I’ve struggled with my TV watching in the past, I was convinced I could lower my monthly bill; and with all my reflection and spiritual growth, I could easily be able to choose when to flip on and off that remote.

Then about a week ago I was speaking to Reed Coleman, a client of mine from Dove Lewis who was in her last Coaching Session. I gave her the opportunity to ask me anything and she quickly asked if I had any vices. I immediately stated that television was my primary vice.

Finally last Tuesday Night, while watching yet another reality based mind molding show, I heard my wife and daughter laughing and playing upstairs. “Am I crazy?” I thought as I realized how plugged into this little black machine I really was. Slowly I became aware that this tiny box was sucking my soul and separating me from my family time –something that I truly value.

Wednesday morning I woke up and declared that no longer would I relinquish my time to being zoned out in a chair staring blankly at the Tube. Perhaps I am a little extreme; however I called a friend, borrowed a bat, and proceeded to sever my umbilical chord to my TV- all the while releasing my frustrations to this major addiction.

Some may say a few hours of TV in the evening a couple of nights week is not an addiction; however in my life I was no longer choosing the television, it was choosing me.

As business professionals we all need some down time. Is your down time rejuvenating you or just draining your life-force? Take a good hard look in your life and see if your vice of alcohol, sex, shopping, the internet, or TV is keeping you from a passionate fulfilled life. I challenge you to get a little crazy and choose your best life.

Wishing You All a Happy Monday,

Jason
