How to Find Your Panic Zone and Love it! (184 Seconds)

Have you found yourself in your panic zone lately?  The thought of unpaid bills or the task of trying to squeeze in some more time for the things you really love has left you feeling a bit freaked out and totally overwhelmed.

You find yourself taking that age old advice to just put your head down and get the work done.

The problem is as you keep working harder more work is showing up and the rainbow at the end tunnel has turned into three more appointments and 30 more emails to respond to.  Instead of being driven you may be driving yourself head first into the panic zone.

Currently my wife and I are taking a Non-Violent Communication training.  The trainer started the class by explaining how we live our life in the following three zones:

  1. The Comfort Zone – This is safe and in this zone we know what we like and what to expect
  2. The Learning Zone – This can be uncomfortable as we learn new skills and this zone gives us the ability to grow and expand.
  3. The Panic Zone – This is where we are no longer learning.  We have to withdraw, become aggressive or completely shut down.

Now, I must admit I love the comfort zone and like the learning zone.  However, since this class I’ve been enjoying my awareness around the Panic Zone.

It’s in the Panic Zone, that we have overshot our ability to learn because we are now feeling sudden overpowering terror and can either catch ourselves and take a step back into learning or completely freak out and have a meltdown.

Recently, I have been getting busier and busier in business.  I saw myself cross the line into red alert when I my thoughts became obsessed with the amount of work to get done. Friends and family started asking me if I was okay and reflected that I sounded exhausted.  The kicker was when I started sneaking onto my computer on Sundays just to get a “little” bit of work done.

Hmmmm.  Guy who teaches others about overwhelm is landed smack in the middle of being overwhelm himself – classic story.

As I started hitting the Panic Zone, I asked the question- what do I need?.  Clearly the answer was support.  So this past week being tired an exhausted of my own complaints, I hired a bookkeeper, had a friend help me organize my office, and I am opening myself of to receiving more help.  As I result, I have been more rested, relaxed, and most importantly really enjoying my family.

So the moral of this week’s Minute, is to include your Panic Zone into your own learning.  If you are headed to or already in the Panic Zone, take a breath, and know that it is never too late to do things differently.  Choose to ask yourself "what is it that I need?" And then take steps to make the changes which will address your needs.

Wishing you all a Happy Monday

Jason
